Below is an email that sent to me via sister who has been working with Mental Health patients (Muslims) in East London. They desperately need our help. Please read:

In the name of Allah the Most Gracious the Most Merciful

I wanted to bring to your attention about recent events unfolding at Newham Mental Health Trust. There was a brother who was sadly admitted at the Trust for seven months late last year  but Alhamdulillah he made progress and has since benn discharged but please make dua for him to fully recover but in the course of this email he has requested to be anonymous. Whilst he was there he told me of stories that would shock you one of the stories that shocked me was the number of muslims changing their religion to Christianity but I asked him how could this happen? He told me that at the Trust there is a Spiritual and Health department that caters for all religions including Islam but he said that the Christian priests were very active providing different activities ranging from ward visits to providing some sort of therapies I believe in the hope of converting muslims to Christianity.

Whilst I was there on visits I personally have seen them arranging Sunday services and this included Muslim patients this brother was once taken there upon discovering that this was a Christian sermon he requested to be sent back to the ward. He told me that everyday the priests visited wards comforting patients at the same time spreading their religion in the hope of winning them. Once this brother requested to see the Muslim Chaplin who is a sister in the name of Jusna Begum it took him atleast four days to get seen and the conversation only lasted about 5 minutes which was shocking! and then the brother requested for Prayer timetable and a prayer mat but his call was heedless not only once did he request but on so many occassions until a Muslim nurse got one printed from the internet for him and he also revealed that bibles and crosses were available in a shot! I personally and Allah is my witness know of a sister by the name of Khadija who suffered from some sort of mental break down was influenced and changed her religion to Christianity even my mother once visited her and saw the state of her  tears started flowing from my dear mother May the Almighty Allah (SWT) forgive sister Khadijah and guide her. During his time at the trust the brother made friendship with another  Muslim brother called Ahmed who had been there for a long period of time they used to spend most of the time in each others company discussing Islam and remembering Allah(SWT). They made a very strong brotherhood and used to keep in touch after Ahmed was discharged. Not long this brother received chilling news about Ahmed sadly he committed suicide and left behind his children and wife this was shocking to me as well as I had spoken to him before but never had the chance to meet him.

I managed to speak to the Muslim Chaplin, sister Jusna Begum in trying to find ways on how the Muslim patients can be alleviated from their suffering but I was shocked to discover that even the local Masajids whom she and her manager  once visited in trying to get some sort of help did NOT want to know. Overall in analysing her conversation she is one busy Muslim Chaplin who attends both the Newham and Tower Hamlets Mental Health Trust ALONE! So just imagine how many Muslim patients are there in both hospitals? I know that the issue of mental health is a taboo amongst some Muslims and some I am sorry to say perceive this as a shame and not many families are eager to express or the willingness to talk about it or get help but brothers believe me I have witnessed it and unless it happens to your family or your friends May Allah (SWT) protect us all then you will understand it. I feel sorrow and grief every time I pass by the Trust thinking of the Muslims there. Brothers and sisters we should never despair but we should always work together in the hope of pleasing the Most Merciful and InshaAllah the reward will be true Gardens under which rivers flow.

Recently I made more enquiries on volunteering and I discovered that they needed more Muslim volunteers. I spoke to one of the managers, Raphael Zernoff  who works at Tower Hamlets Mental Health Trust Spiritual and Religious Care office. He advised me that those who are interested in volunteering can attend an introductory course which is in two parts and this will be held at Tower Hamlets Mental Health Trust in Mile End Hospital. The first part of the course will start on 16/04/2010 between 17.30 – 20.00 and the second part will resume on the 23/04/2010 same time. If you are interested please speak or email Raphael at 0208 121 5006 Mon, Thursday or Friday email: Raphael.zernoff@Eastlondon.nhs.uk The course will give you the awareness into Mental Health issues, what to expect and also general rules. I should stress that most of the patients that i met were normal people who had careers and jobs  but through the course of their lives suffered some sort of nerves break down or mainly stressed related and InshaAllah through Dawah and Ruqiya it is treatable. I strongly urge brothers and sisters please to make an effort in volunteering how we can sleep at night knowing that our brothers and sisters need our help please pass this email and make others aware of the Forgotten Ummah.

I pray to the Almighty Allah (SWT) to protect us all and alleviate the suffering of the Ummah.

On the authority of Ibn Umar (radi’allahu anhu) that he heard the Messenger of Allah (sallalahu walayhe wasalam) saying: The Muslim is a brother of a Muslim, he should neither oppress him nor disgrace him. That who cares for his brother’s need Allah will care for him. Allah will alleviate one of his sufferings on the Day of Resurrection; and that who veils a Muslim, Allah will veil him on the Resurrection Day. (Agreed upon.)
